Olympics day

Hello and  Welcome back to my blog! This week, on Wednesday, we hosted a  Olympics-style day where the year 8 hosted different types of  activities. There were leaders for  different countries that guided their team to their activity. After each team completed their exercise, me and to other people hosted the three-legged race and the sack race. Each team had to score a point out of five. but before all this happened we had an olympic gold medalist hamish kerr come to our school and talk about what it takes to be a olympian and his journey to become a high jump gold medalist .

Laudato Si

Kia ora

For the past few weeks in the mornings we have  been given little  lessons on the letter wrote to all of us, known as Laudato Si’. Laudato Si’ was written by Pope Francis. The letter  consists of talking about the issues with our world, and the fact that we are treating the world like it has infinite resources. It also consists of talking about the earths beauty and the complexity of nature, and this ties into the task we did yesterday. yesterday, We were told to make a poem about the beauty of our world and nature. For this, we were allowed to choose any poem we prefer, and I decided to compose a Haiku.

What is your favourite type of Poem?

Last week, on Tuesday, we went on a trip to Sumner Beach to learn about the sand dunes. A lady from the city council came down to talk about how the sand dunes were created. They form when water begins to erode mountains and tiny pieces of rock that flow into a river. This would then lead into the ocean, where the tiny bits of rock that were now sand would be spread all across the seashore, forming the sand dunes that we see today.

After she talked to us, we went down to the sand, which is when we were told to create a mini sand dune that was a meter long and up to knee height. We also got taught about what animals live in the sand dunes and all the threats to the sand dunes. After a break for morning tea, we were told to make a modified version of our mini sand dune with all the protection from the threats to the sand dunes.

Have you ever been to the sand dunes? When and where?

For this week’s RE create task we had to make a word search or a poster or you can choose to redesign St Francis as an Eco-School. I made a poster representing Pick Up Your Rubbish! I made it because people aren’t picking up after themselves and it is hurting our planet. I also made a word search about Laudato Si and I put words in the search like Rubbish, Bin, Plants, Greenhouse gasses and lots more. click on the link

Amazing reading

This week for reading we have been reading about water quality in waitaha Canterbury .

The steps were.

Step 1: Water Source Hero!

  • Choose your water source: a nearby stream, lake, beach, or your tap water.
  • Imagine a superhero who champions the health of this water source. Give them a cool name and a brief backstory!

Step 2: Water Woes

  • Think about threats to your chosen water source. What activities on land could be polluting it? (farms, factories, busy roads)
  • For tap water, consider the journey it takes through pipes.

Step 3: Superpower Sketch

  • Using Google Drawings or Canva, create a sketch of your water superhero.
  • Draw their costume! Does it incorporate elements of their water source (fish scales, flowing cape)?
  • Give them a superpower related to water purification, fighting pollution, or educating others.

Step 4: Water Wisdom

  • Design a short speech bubble or caption for your superhero. What message do they have for people about protecting water quality?

I only got up to step 2 but here is my create task.

Catholicism In Other Countries

This week for RE we had to explore expressions of Catholic identity in other countries and recognise how the gift of our cultures impacts Catholic Practice and worship. The create task was to make a slide about a country and we had to make a video reciting the sign of the cross in this countries language. I chose Sri Lanka because that is my home country and I didn’t know how to say it in my language Sinhala.

This is my create

Magical Maths

Kia Ora

This week for math we have been learning how to add fractions. this is how to do it step by step:

Make sure the denominators (the bottom numbers) are the same. If they are not the same, find a common denominator by finding the least common multiple of the two denominators.

2. Once you have the same denominators, add the numerators (the top numbers) together. The sum will be the numerator of the new fraction.

3. Keep the denominator the same as the common denominator you found in step 1.

For example, let’s add 1/4 and 2/4:

1. The denominators are already the same, so we can add the numerators: 1 + 2 = 3.

2. The common denominator is 4, so the sum is 3/4.

3. The fraction 3/4 is already in simplest form, so the final answer is 3/4.

Following these steps will help you add fractions accurately.

People who stood up for themself

Prefect PBL

Kia Ora

This term’s PBL we could make an island using cardboard or Minecraft. I created an island out of cardboard for mine.
I added rocks to my model, and they work great for construction for my cave . Metamorphic rock is an excellent material for building. Since sedimentary rock is made up of sandstone, which is known for breaking easily,  so I wouldn’t use it. The life forms in my Island are some trees and some rainbow trout in the river. The type of soils that I have is clay that is underground and sand dirt. The air quality on my Island is really good because there is no humans to ruin my Island the air is made up with oxygen and a bit of  carbon dioxide.
